Unto the Hills

Unto the Hills

The recording features a number of psalms and hymns in whole or in part as they are sung in the worship services of the Canadian Reformed Churches.

"Reformed Churches have always attached great value to the Psalter as a collection of songs of God's covenant. Their first complete Psalter was published in Geneva in 1562 .... The Genevan Psalter has been associated with the churches of the Reformation ever since.

When members of the Reformed Churches in the Netherlands (Liberated) came to North America after the Second World War and established the Canadian Reformed Churches, they brought with them their appreciation of the Genevan Psalter .... In 1972, the first complete Book of Praise: Anglo-Genevan Psalter appeared, and English metrical versions of all the psalms could be sung for the first time to the authentic Genevan melodies of the sixteenth century." (Preface, Book of Praise of the Canadian Reformed Churches.)

Probably the earliest composer to provide four part harmony settings for the complete Psalter was Claude Goudimel (1507-1572), a contemporary and countryman of John Calvin. Most of the Genevan tunes on this recording are sung to the Goudimel arrangements. However, arrangements by Claude Lejeune and Zoltan Kodaly are also included. Texts from the Book of Praise of the Canadian Reformed Churches are used with permission of the Standing Committee for the publication of the Book of Praise. The Presbyterian Church in Canada granted permission to include No. 16. Permission to use the remaining music that is not in the public domain has been obtained from the CMRRA or other organizations.
